Chiang Mai was simply beautiful, the people lovely.. my team of adult helpers and youth leaders have all put in the hard work to make the trip successful.. i couldn't have done it without everyone's help.. with the sponsorship from some of us, i gave everyone in the team a "i helped." t-shirt.. i think it's the coolest shirt in town at the moment..
We were split into two teams, namely adult and youths and were each given a house or a family that we could work with.. and we were given a larger house to build.. it's the house of a divorcee with her daughter and nephew and they aren't exactly poor to the core, but that's the beauty of a housing ministry like Habitat for Humanity.. they are into social partnerships.. both with volunteers, thus allowing them opportunities to do some charity work, and at the same time allowing someone who needs a helping hand with finances to have a home..
The family were particularly grateful for our help and even though we didn't have many words exchanged, we all had the same one purpose, and that was to do as much as we can.. it takes about 10,000 SGD to build a house like that..
i didn't manage to raise all the money that i needed.. so i had to fork out quite a fair bit.. ouch! hehe.. so i should take this opportunity to say, i am really not a rich guy! just someone with a heart to do something different with my spare time.. and at the same time, allowing each and everyone of you to partner me in this endeavour..
so.. on behalf of my team.. and me.. thank you.. your contributions have made a big difference in our lives, and the lives of the people that we went to bless..

i am going to chiang mai with habitat for humanity this coming november 18-25 to build houses for the poor.. these are the folks that are living in slumps and don't have a decent form of shelter over their heads.. habitat for humanity
http://www.habitat.org.sg/ comes in and provides decent shelter for these families.. and engages volunteers like myself to raise funds and also to go there to build houses for the poor..
this is not a luxury trip as we will be spending 5 days labouring with the families, and in a sense, giving them a hope vicariously through the home.. there are about 19 members in this team named BTBuilders and we are made up of 8 youths and the rest are adult members..
there is a substantial amount that needs to be raised and raising it is probably easy for some.. but i rather involve people in this cause.. and for that matter.. i have printed 100 t-shirts with the words "i helped." printed simply to thank our supporters, and at the same time, the wearers of the shirt become ambassadors to this work that we are doing.. and by wearing they can also explain our mission to the various change activists that they meet.. =) powerful..
the shirt retails for $15 and i will mail the shirt to you if you're in singapore.. if you're from overseas.. i will let you know the postage for overseas.. just drop me an email and let me know the size, and how many shirts you want to get! i don't have many sizes remaining, but please check with me first!
for overseas contributions, i only accept paypal transactions.. =)
